Once upon a time, a young man from Rio de Janeiro who loved the Beatles wrote a simple tune called Anna Júlia amostras de 30s - not necessarily inspired by their sound, but belonging to the Beatlesque school of melodic pop. Now, imagine the face of this young composer when he heard that George Harrison, the Beatles’ guitarist himself, had participated in a cover of Anna Júlia in English! It’s true: English singer Jim Capaldi (ex- Traffic) was one of the many fans of Los Hermanos’ hit song. And on his next album, Capaldi included a version of Anna Júlia with the participation of Harrison, drummer Ian Paice (of Deep Purple) and singer Paul Weller (ex- The Jam and Style Council).

"I obviously never imagined something like this would ever happen. George Harrison is an icon for me, he’s the guy I see on magazine covers at the newsstands when I walk the streets. I’m his fan", composer Marcelo Camelo talks about the thrill of having one of his idols record one of his songs. "I fell honored and very happy. Not only because of George, but also because of the other musicians involved in the recording: it’s a great team!"

The singer for Los Hermanos reports how everything came about: "I met Jim Capaldi last year, at a TV channel’s music awards night in Rio. He told me he loved Anna Júlia and that he was thinking of recording it on his next album. I thought it was cool…" Capaldi’s wife is Brazilian and he’s been living both in Brazil and Europe since the 70’s.

The relationship between Capaldi and Camelo strengthened. "I visited him at his Ipanema apartment last year and he showed me the version he made for Anna Júlia. It was cool, though it was a very loose version, the lyrics were different but the chorus was still the same", a proud Camelo recalls. "What’s funny is that when he told me he was going to record it, I said ‘Yeah, right…’ And I totally forgot about it. Then he called me up this year and told me not only it was ready, but George Harrison was in it!".

The tune was recorded in Germany. Capaldi’s, Harrison’s, Weller’s and Paice’s Anna Júlia will be released as a single in Europe, on August 13th, through the German label SPV.
