Universal Music has released a series of 16 original BPM albums in Germany. The project is headed by Brazilian music enthusiast Christian Kellersmann, who found a favorable occasion in the celebration of 500 years since the Portuguese moored on this side of the Atlantic. Some of the available titles include true pearls, such as Construção (Chico Buarque, 1971); Expresso 2222 (Gilberto Gil, 1972); Índia (Gal Costa, 1973); Caetano Veloso (Caetano Veloso, 1968); Tecnicolor (Mutantes, 1970). The pack includes João Gilberto, Elis Regina, João Bosco, Maria Bethânia and... Tom Jobim, of course.

Christian Kellersmann, 40, is head of the jazz and classical music departments at Universal in Germany. His love of Brazilian music started out when a friend gave him a copy of Gilberto Gil’s Luar: " I had listened to Stan Getz’s version of Girl from Ipanema, but only got to know Brazilian pop music through Gil", he says.

The most successful Brazilian releases in Germany, though, are the two editions of the compilation A Trip to Brazil, organized by Brazilian producer Arnaldo DeSouteiro. With sales figures close to 20 thousand copies, Kellersmann bets on the continuation of the project. "Arnaldo and I are already planning the next edition, focused on contemporary acts, although we might have to include a few bossa tracks just to make sure."

The third volume of A Trip to Brazil shall be released in Germany. According to Christian, the Cuban music boom that followed Wim Wenders’ movie (Buena Vista Social Club) may increase the interest in Brazilian music among Germans. "International pop and rock have become boring. People are looking for new things and the future looks good for Brazilian music".
