A pocket show by African singer/songwriter Lokua Kanza, with special appearances by singers Rita Ribeiro and Paula Lima, launched the French Music Office in Brazil. Linked to the French Consulate, the institution intends to develop relationships between music professionals from both countries, so as to foment a greater interchange. Brazil is the fourth country in the world to house a branch of the Bureau Export de la Musique Française, already established in the USA, England and Germany. "Brazil has grown a lot within the record industry, being the 6th country in the international market", said Bruno Boulay, representing the Office. "We were pretty sure that the next office would be opened in Brazil. Music-wise, this is the richest country in Latin America", completed the French producer who also runs the French-Brazilian label Totem Records, responsible for releasing albums by Brazilian artists in France.
Next month, the Brazilian office will be featured on the Bureau site, which will be launched during the MIDEM in Cannes, France. "The site should serve as a source of local data. A German producer, for instance, who wants to organize and event with Brazilian musicians, will be able to exchange information with Brazilian producers through our site", Boulay explains. The address will be www.french-music.org. Another project underway is a New French Music Festival, due to 2001. "Our idea is to bring electronic, jazz and pop French artists. The core of this project would be the meetings between French and Brazilian artists", says Boulay. In spite of not having any names, yet, the French producer claims that he would like to have Lenine as the host in Recife, and that he intends to suggest some rappers' names to be the hosts in São Paulo. "Then we could promote a French version of the fest", he finishes.
