The musician Herbert Vianna, singer and guitarist of the band Paralamas do Sucesso, has suffered an accident this afternoon while flying a monoplane in the south of Rio de Janeiro state. His wife, British journalist Lucy Needhan-Vianna, 36, was with him and died after the plane crashed into the sea. Herbert has been transferred to a hospital in Rio in extremely delicate condition. According to witnesses’ reports, Lucy was allegedly trapped by the seat belt and drowned.
According to the doctors, the next 48 hours will determine the Herbert's recovery. Besides neurologic problems, the musician has a broken vertebra and a possible cut through the aorta artery.
Herbert and Lucy Vianna were in the town of Angra dos Reis for a friend's birthday. Herbert was an experienced pilot, following a family tradition. His father is an Army pilot.
Herbert and Lucy had been married for 9 years and had three children.
