The Meeting on Independent Record Production finished with the attendants cheering the foundation of the ABMI (Associação Brasileira da Música Independente, or Independent Music Brazilian Association). The entity's main goal is to "unite independent record producers around common interests and activities, so as to represent and foment Independent Music".

The representatives of the 31 labels that have founded ABMI have named a comission to work on the association's statutes: Benjamin Taubkin (of the label Núcleo Contemporâneo), José Carlos Costa Neto (Dabliú Discos), Eduardo Muzkat (MDC Discos), Tomas Roth (Lua Nova Discos) and Pena Schmidt (Tinitus).

The attendants on the Meeting appeared to be particularly interested in the problems concerning the well-known payola - the unofficial money that the majors offer to FM stations so as to promote their albums. "Everybody knows that the payola is an institution on commercial radio stations", says journalist Patrícia Palumbo.

The document issued by the group also describes a series of general goals for the association: to promote independent music products; to promote yearly meetings and awards; to represent independent labels in the country and abroad. Information on ABMI can be temporarily checked at abmi@pobox.com .
