As it has been happening in past years, the JVC Jazz Festival will include Brazilian artists in its line-up in 2001. With dozens of concerts in different theaters and jazz clubs in New York City, the 29th edition of the event takes place between June 17th and 30th. The first Brazilian act to perform at the fest is Bebel Gilberto, who's sharing the bill with singer Cesária Evora (from Cape Verde) at the Beacon Theatre, on June 22nd. Two days later, at the same venue, pianist Eliane Elias' trio participates in the Latin Night, dubbed Calle 54, with Paquito D'Rivera, Gato Barbieri, Michel Camilo and Jerry González.

On the 25th, at the Carnegie Hall, a tribute to Steve Sondheim shall count on the appearance of songwriter and guitarist Oscar Castro Neves. On the 29th, the bill includes two Brazilian acts. At the Hammersmith Ballroom, Carlinhos Brown shares the stage with Afro-Cuban All Stars. At the same time, at the majestic Avery Fisher Hall (at the Lincoln Center), Deodato 2001 Celebration takes place, led by Eumir Deodato and featuring guest appearances by Maysa (who used to sing with acid jazz British group Incognito), percussionist Omar Hakim and saxophonist Teodross Avery, among others.
