Paulo Moura: from pop to classical and back

After winning the Best Brazilian Roots/Regional Album award in the Latin Grammys for the CD Pixinguinha, fully dedicated to the works of the king of choro, the unique composer/clarinetist/saxophonist/maestro is releasing a new album called Paulo Moura Visita Gershwin & Jobim (Paulo Moura Visits Gershwin & Jobim, through the label Pau Brasil). "The Grammy made me very happy, it’s given me energy to produce more".
The new release is a live recording from 1998 in which Moura and his back up band (Jerzy Milewsky, violin; Jota Moraes, piano; Cliff Korman, keyboards; Nelson Faria, acoustic and electric guitars; Rodolfo Stroeter, bass; and Pascoal Meirelles, drums) played standards by the musicians regarded by Paulo as the greatest melody makers of the century, two "white guys with black souls" (read the review). According to the clarinetist, the time lapse between the recording and the releasing of the album can be blamed on copyright issues.
The maestro intends to make a new album in 2000, in which his clarinet will be escorted by three percussionists (Pascoal Meirelles, Jovi and Carlos Negreiros).
