ROCK CITY, 11:15 p.m. – The last time that Sepultura played in Rio was two years ago, as opening act for Metallica, and they were being anxiously awaited by the metal fans tonight. starting the set with the big hit Roots, Sepultura and their new vocalist Derek Green didn’t let anyone down, even though the P.A. was strangely low for a band with such destructive power. The band caressed their audience with two songs from the upcoming release, Nation, scheduled for March: Saga and Sepulnation, the latter being abandoned in the middle so that the band members could rescue a fan that had managed to climb onto the stage and was about to being gripped by security guys. Sepultura satisfied people’s curiosity, but did not present anything new in relation to what their music.

In excellent shape (Igor Cavalera remains as one amazing drummer), the musicians played numbers from their last album, Against (from 1998, the first with Derek on the vocals): Choke, Spit and Tribus. But the songs from Max’s era worked better. 90’s picks like Refuse/Resist, Territory, Propaganda and Slave New World, and 80’s hardcore gems like Arise, Troops of Doom, Desperate Cry, Beneath The Remains and Dead Embryonic Cells. These two last songs were performed with the speed and the fury of the old days, building up a yearning for the emerging Sepultura that played Rock In Rio II, in broad daylight, 10 years ago.
