The collection Sambas da Minha Terra (or Sambas of My Land) is coming out now on BMG. Devised by producer Carlos Alberto Sion, it features six CDs with all different types of samba. Five out of the six follow specific themes: Samba-Enredo, Partido-Alto/Pagode, Samba-Canção, Afro/Raízes and Samba de Breque/Gafieira. The sixth album, Eu Canto Samba, features classics only. Picked from the BMG catalogue, two of the volumes sound more inviting to rarity aficionados: the breque/gafieria and the afro/raízes (raízes = roots) discs.

Samba de Breque/Gafieira 30'' excerpts brings the big master Moreira da Silva on Esta Noite eu Tive um Sonho (em Alemão) and Amigo Urso, plus Miltinho (Teleco-teco nº2), Jorge Veiga (Acertei no Milhar) and Cyro Monteiro (Falsa Baiana). There are a few nice duos which bestow some extra charm on the CD: Jorge Veiga and Cyro Monteiro (Café Soçaite), Miúcha and Tom Jobim (Comigo É Assim) and Dicró and Moreira da Silva (Kid Morengueira).

Afro/Raízes 30 is irresistible, too. In it, all of the ancient influences of African religions in the Brazilian music are displayed as maxixe, jongo, ciranda, etc. Pelo Telefone (from 1917), Conversa de Crioulo (from 1932) and Mulata Baiana (1938) are good examples.

The CD Sambas-Enredo 30 features recordings from the past 30 years. Curiously, it carries sambas that have never been "enredos" (themes) for samba schools, such as Xingu (João Nogueira), O Mestre-Sala dos Mares (João Bosco), Vai Passar (Chico Buarque) and Foi um Rio que Passou em Minha Vida (Paulinho da Viola). But Iaiá do Cais Dourado (Martinho da Vila) and Mercadores e Suas Tradições (Jamelão) are true representatives of the style.

Partido-Alto/Pagode 30 gathers some of the greatest masters of all time. Martinho da Vila, Zeca Pagodinho, Beth Carvalho, Bezerra da Silva, Paulinho da Viola, Alcione and Jamelão appear in delightful tracks. The disc also features duos: Candeia and Nelson Cavaquinho, Elton Medeiros and Guilherme de Brito and Dona Ivone Lara and Candeia

A music genre in its own right
Samba-Canção 30'' excerpts (or samba-tune) is a style that couldn't be left out of the package. It was definitely established by the 1950s, through artists like Cauby Peixoto (Exemplo), Orlando Silva (Amigo Leal), Carmen Costa (Quase), Nelson Gonçalves (A Noite do Meu Bem), Jamelão (the very tacky and dramatic Caixa de Ódio) and Lupicínio Rodrigues (Esses Moços). The disc also features Dalva de Oliveira hits interpreted by João Nogueira (Segredo) and Maria Bethânia (Errei, Sim).

Completing the series, the album Eu Canto Samba 30'' excerpts, is basically comprised of classics. Recent ones, like Eu Canto Samba (Paulinho da Viola, 1989) and Um Ser de Luz (Alcione, 1983), and oldies like Aos Pés da Cruz (Orlando Silva, 1942) or Tenha Pena de Mim (Aracy de Almeida, 1937). There are also alternative versions of Na Cadência do Samba, with Nelson Gonçalves, and Samba em Paz (1965), with Caetano Veloso.
